Bonden label was founded in 2017 by designer and trend analyst Kati Hienonen. The mission was to make products with care for the environment and with respect to local craftsmanship traditions where multi-usability, natural aesthetics, and practicality has always been valued. These were essential properties to make living easier and even possible in harsh conditions. With limited resources it was vital to create everything with a respect towards nature.
At Bonden, I wanted to keep the Nordic design DNA alive, but I also wanted to renew it by using our own natural materials in a new and innovative way. At Bonden we are using the purest Nordic natural materials that are functionally natural. Our products are dyed using plant colours, as we want to avoid using toxic industrial chemicals. On top of that, our whole production process takes place in Finland, starting from spinning the yarn. When designing the textures, I pay great attention to the organic and sensorial qualities. For Bonden eco-luxury is not just about sustainable production but also about bringing nature's touch to the skin by different structures. With tactile texture of the fabrics and the use of non-toxic natural materials, we create home accessories that connect our senses back to the nature.
Sustainable business practice has been in our core since the very beginning. But sustainability is a word that’s used so often it’s hard to know what brands mean when they say so. Therefore we think it is important to clarify what sustainability means to Bonden. That’s why we make a point of communicating not only of the origin of the products but also of our Northern culture, traditions and our tight relationship towards the nature.
The Bonden name comes from Bonden Paavo (Farmer Paavo of Saarijärvi) a Finnish legend, who was a determined peasant farmer that survived years of bad harvest by doubling the leftover flour with bark of pinewood every year during three years to make the flour last longer and stave off starvation. In Bonden products natural materials are used in new and creative ways - as Bonden Paavo did- in the spirit of Nordic design.
Quiet luxury of North
For us, Nordic people, quiet luxury of north means togetherness with the nature, a feeling of relaxation, which sensitizes and inspires us. We have a heritage of nomadic lifestyle where multi-usability, natural aesthetics, and practicality were essential properties to make the living possible in harsh conditions. With limited resources it was vital to create everything in a respect of nature.
Nature is perfect in its imperfectness
The special characteristic of every Bonden product is its texture, mimicking the organic and imperfect nature. If nature would be perfect it would not perhaps be as beautiful. The mosses, roots, and rocks of the forest activate our senses and help us wind down, in a way similar to the core idea of Bonden is to bring home such imperfectness and harmony through textiles.
These same properties, with the easiness and longevity of style and natural organity of textures we would like to bring to each Bonden product. An important role of the design process is the utilization of special characteristics of natural raw material used, such as breathability and dirt/water repellent features.
